Hey Grandpa – Ham & Cheese Sticky Buns

This is great to take to a potluck or family gathering but it is a little messy.

And it sounds a bit strange to make a sauce to pour over sandwiches but give it a try and I think you’ll be surprised. 

The ladies at the Red Hat meeting always enjoyed these and they would make great sandwiches for a tea or for the little ones.

Ham and Cheese Sticky Buns

2/3 c. butter

1/3 c. brown sugar, or less, to taste

2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

2 Tbsp. spicy brown mustard

2 Tbsp. yellow mustard

24 Martins brand Little Party Rolls – or other similar slider size rolls – don’t break them apart

½ lb. sliced ham

¾ lb. sliced swiss or American cheese.

Don’t break apart the rolls but do slice them in half (they aren’t cut in the package so you need to cut them to make 2 halves) and place the bottoms in a 9 x 13 inch pan.  Layer cheese, ham and then cheese and top with the roll tops.

Heat the butter, sugar, mustards and Worcestershire sauce in a pan and boil for 2 minutes. Pour over the rolls and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.  Slice between the rolls to serve. These can be assembled a day ahead and when ready to bake pour the boiled sauce over them and bake as directed.

You can decrease the amount of brown sugar or use honey instead if you wish.  Donna also like to use more ham and cheese than the recipe called for because she “didn’t want a skimpy sandwich”.

Yummy with some dill pickles or cole slaw to get the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch sweet and sour effect.
